Advent calendar, instructions for use

The season of Advent always begins on the first Sunday of Advent. The first Sunday of Advent is the Sunday closest to November 30, the day of Saint Andrew the Apostle. The date of the first Sunday of Advent varies depending on the day of the week that Saint Andrew the Apostle is celebrated.

This means the length of the Advent season is not the same every year. The first period of the Liturgical Year can start from November 27 (longer Advent calendar) to December 3 (shorter Advent calendar). In this way there can be years that the Advent calendar has 28 days (from November 27 to December 24) to years that the Advent calendar has 22 days (from December 3 to December 24).

The Advent calendar, as previously mentioned, has 28 Advent cards. That is, it is designed for the years in which the first Sunday of Advent is celebrated on November 27. In this case everything is clear. Each Advent card corresponds to a day of the Advent season. We will use one card for each day from November 27, the first Sunday of Advent, to December 24, the fourth Saturday of Advent.

But how should we use the Advent calendar in other cases?

Advent calendar, instructions for short Advent season

We use the term short Advent season to designate the Advent season of all those years in which the first Sunday of Advent does not coincide with November 27. That is, years in which Advent has less than 28 days.

In these cases we will discard the cards corresponding to the days not included in Advent. These days always correspond to the fourth week. Here is a summary of the cards that should be discarded each year depending on the day that the first Sunday of Advent is celebrated:

  • The first Sunday of Advent is November 27. Christmas Eve is Saturday. No card is discarded, as explained in the previous point.
  • The first Sunday of Advent is November 28. Christmas Eve is Friday. We discard 1 card (Fourth Saturday of Advent).
  • The first Sunday of Advent is November 29. Christmas Eve is Thursday. We discard 2 cards (Fourth Saturday of Advent and Fourth Friday of Advent).
  • The first Sunday of Advent is November 30. Christmas Eve is Wednesday. We discard 3 cards (Fourth Saturday of Advent, Fourth Friday of Advent and Fourth Thursday of Advent).
  • The first Sunday of Advent is December 1. Christmas Eve is Tuesday. We discard 4 cards (Fourth Saturday of Advent, Fourth Friday of Advent, Fourth Thursday of Advent and Fourth Wednesday of Advent).
  • The first Sunday of Advent is December 2. Christmas Eve is Monday. We discard 5 cards (Fourth Saturday of Advent, Fourth Friday of Advent, Fourth Thursday of Advent, Fourth Wednesday of Advent and Fourth Tuesday of Advent).
  • The first Sunday of Advent is December 3. Christmas Eve is a Sunday and coincides with the fourth Sunday of Advent . We discard 6 cards (Fourth Saturday of Advent, Fourth Friday of Advent, Fourth Thursday of Advent, Fourth Wednesday of Advent, Fourth Tuesday of Advent and Fourth Monday of Advent).

It is important that discarded cards are saved for years to come. In this way, the Advent calendar can be used for many years.
