The Crucifixion of Christ on Mount Calvary
The figure of Calvary represents the moment when Jesus is crucified on Mount Calvary or Golgotha. In total 11 figures are represented; in the center Jesus crucified on the Cross is represented, to his right and left are the Good Thief (Dimas) and the Bad Thief (Gestas) who were crucified together with Jesus. The figures of the three Marys at the foot of the three crosses, Saint John the Evangelist, two Roman soldiers and two other people are also represented.
The sculptural ensemble is made of pulp wood. The figures are 30 centimeters in size, hand-painted and have glass eyes.
Calvary is the name of the mountain outside Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified. Its name comes from rocks in the shape of skulls on one of the sides of the hill. It is also known by the name of Golgotha.
