One of the times that candles are especially relevant is during the Advent season. Advent is the time when the Liturgical Year begins . It is a time when Christians prepare for the Birth of Jesus, we prepare for Christmas. During Advent we live the hope that the birth of the Child Jesus brings, and the penance that we have to face for all our sins. The Advent candles and the Advent wreath are some of the instruments through which we reflect the wait for the arrival of the light that will illuminate the world. With the birth of the Child Jesus in his crib, one more Christmas, our hearts, our homes and our parishes will be filled with joy and hope.
The season of Advent begins on the first Sunday of Advent with the lighting of a candle. The lighting of the Advent candle is usually accompanied by a prayer and a reading from the Bible. For the next three weeks, an Advent candle is lit each Sunday . The week before Christmas all four candles will remain lit. An Advent wreath is usually used to place the candles. This crown is usually decorated with green vegetation and has a circular shape.
