Embroidery and Cutwork of the Altar Cloth

The altar tablecloth front is decorated with three elements:

  • Central Composition of JHS

The central part of the altar cloth front is decorated with an embroidered and cutwork composition featuring JHS letters embroidered in golden thread.

The embroidery of JHS, the wheat ears, and the golden rays emphasize the mystery of the transubstantiation, where bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ.

The composition is completed with various cutwork elements outlined with white thread embroidery.

  • Two Golden Wheat Ear Compositions

On both sides of the central composition, there are two decorative elements featuring wheat ears embroidered in golden thread and leaves embroidered in green thread.

Both embroidered figures are completed with cutwork vegetal elements outlined with white thread.

Liturgical Symbolism of the Altar Tablecloth

The liturgical tablecloth is not just a decorative element but is imbued with spiritual significance. It represents the Holy Shroud, the cloth that covered the body of Christ in His tomb.

Additionally, its presence on the altar reflects reverence for the sacred table where the Eucharist is celebrated, the memorial of Christ's sacrifice.

The use of the tablecloth in the liturgy has deep historical roots. Since the 8th century, it was used to protect the altar from accidental spills and as a sign of reverence.

Its design and crafting have evolved over time, always maintaining its liturgical and symbolic function.
