The Mandylion of Edessa, also known as the Image of Edessa, Cloth of Edessa, or Veil of Edessa, is one of the sacred Catholic relics directly related to Jesus.

The Mandylion is a cloth that, according to tradition, miraculously bears the image of Jesus Christ.

King Abgar of Edessa was gravely ill with leprosy. Fearing for his life, he called upon the best doctors in his kingdom to heal him. None of the doctors could cure him, but one of them spoke to him about Jesus of Nazareth, a man said to be able to miraculously heal the sick.

King Abgar, impressed by what he had just heard, sent a messenger to Jesus, requesting healing. Christ, moved by his faith, responded that he could not go personally but would send a trusted person who could help him.

Jesus chose Saint Jude Thaddeus to visit the king of Edessa. Christ gave the apostle a cloth to deliver to King Abgar. This cloth was very special because it bore the image of Jesus.

Saint Jude traveled to Edessa and presented the image to the sovereign. When the king touched the cloth, his illness miraculously disappeared.

• The Revelations of Saint Bridget of Sweden about Saint Jude Thaddeus

Saint Bridget of Sweden (1303-1373), one of the most important mystics of the Catholic Church, received numerous divine revelations that were compiled in her work The Celestial Revelations.

In her writings, God revealed to her the importance of fervent prayer and the intercession of the saints.

Saint Bridget wrote that those who pray with devotion to Saint Jude Thaddeus will be heard in their most urgent needs.

Life of Saint Jude Thaddeus | Feast Day

Jude Thaddeus is one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ. In his Gospel, Saint Luke refers to him as "Jude of James." He was the brother of James the Less and a close relative of Christ.

He is credited with the authorship of the Epistle of Jude, a short yet theologically profound letter in which he exhorts Catholics to persevere in faith and remain steadfast in the face of adversity.

According to tradition, after Pentecost, Saint Jude Thaddeus traveled through various regions, including Mesopotamia, Libya, and Persia, preaching the Gospel. On this journey, he was accompanied by Saint Simon the Zealot.

For several years, they spread the word of God throughout Persian lands until they were martyred. Saint Simon was sawed in half, while there are two versions regarding the death of Saint Jude Thaddeus: one states that he was beheaded with an axe, while another claims he was beaten to death with a club.

The Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of these two martyr saints on October 28, the feast of Saint Jude Thaddeus and Saint Simon.
