The carving of Jesus of Our Father Jesus of Medinaceli
The image of Christ of Medinaceli in Madrid is a carving made in Seville in the first half of the 17th century. Although the author is unknown, numerous sources claim it was created in the workshop of sculptor Juan de Mesa.
Initially, it was destined for the Spanish colony of Mamora in Morocco but fell into the hands of Sultan Muley Ismail in 1681. According to legend, the Order of Trinitarians rescued the image, paying its weight in gold, balancing the scale with 30 coins, the same amount Judas received for betraying Jesus.
After its rescue, the image was kept in various locations until it was brought to Madrid in 1682. Since then, its fame as a miraculous image and its spiritual impact on the faithful have made it the epicenter of intense popular devotion.
The image of Christ of Medinaceli symbolizes suffering, redemption, and acceptance of divine destiny. Its serene face, though marked by pain, inspires compassion and hope among the faithful. Additionally, its Trinitarian Cross on the chest, in red and blue, commemorates the rescues carried out by this religious order throughout history.
