Introduction to the Concept of the Ciborium in the Catholic Church

The ciborium is a sacred vessel, a metal container used to reserve and distribute the Eucharist, holding the Blessed Sacrament, that is, the Body of Christ in the form of consecrated hosts.

Early Christians did not usually receive Communion at the locations where they held their liturgical gatherings. The persecutions made religious rituals, as we know them today, very difficult. It was common for the faithful to keep the species in their own homes in hidden places.

In the centuries following the death of Christ, the Eucharistic ritual gradually developed. At that time, there were no specialized vessels to carry out the different phases of the liturgical ritual. It was common to use all kinds of containers to hold the species.

During the Middle Ages, the various stages of the Mass began to be consolidated. In this regard, the first sacred vessels began to be designed specifically to hold the species. The first cylindrical or prismatic pyxes began to appear.

The arrival of the Modern Age consolidated the form of sacred vessels. The ciborium developed with a design similar to the chalice but wider, with greater capacity.

Today, the ciborium is a piece of religious metalware similar to the chalice but with a wider cup. Additionally, it usually has a conical cover crowned by a Cross or a handle with some religious symbol. The main function of this lid is to protect the Sacred Hosts from environmental impurities.
