A Crown of Thorns for Jesus
Crowns have traditionally been a symbol of royalty. Kings and queens wore crowns as a representation of their position and power. The material with which the crowns were made was a sign of the economic, political, and social power held by the person wearing it. Thus, kings had crowns made of the noblest metals adorned with precious stones to show the people their status as leaders of the nation.
The crown of thorns, on the other hand, was not originally a symbol of royalty but was used by the Romans as an instrument of mockery and torture. The thorns, coming from common bushes in the region of Judea, caused intense pain when embedded in the head.
The crown of thorns is one of the most iconic elements of the Passion of Christ.
The Coronation of Thorns of Christ
The coronation of thorns, the moment when the crown made of thorns was placed on Jesus, is a highly significant event. This is evident as this passage from the life of Christ is recorded in all four Gospels (Matthew 27:29, Mark 15:17, Luke 23:11, and John 19:2).
As we can read in the Gospels, Pontius Pilate condemned Christ to die on the Cross. After the condemnation, Roman soldiers flogged Jesus and made him a crown of natural thorn branches.
As they placed the crown of thorns, the soldiers mocked Jesus, sarcastically calling him King of the Jews. In addition to the crown of thorns, they also placed the INRI sign on the Cross, an acronym for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews).
Symbolism of the Crown of Thorns
The crown of thorns, which was originally an element of torture and humiliation, with the sacrifice of Christ became a symbol of great significance for all Christians.
The crown of thorns of Jesus represents suffering, sacrifice, and humility. Christ assumes his role in history as a vehicle for the forgiveness of humanity's sins. With his sacrifice, with his Death and Resurrection, he opens the doors to Eternal Life for all people.
Furthermore, the crown of thorns also represents the celestial and terrestrial royalty of Christ.
How to Make a Thorn Crown for Jesus
Thorn crowns are an important element to place on figures of Jesus or to carry out representations of the Passion during Holy Week.
At Artículos Religiosos Brabander we make thorn crowns entirely by hand.
Firstly, thorn branches are collected. It is essential that the branches have an appropriate degree of ripeness to allow them to be shaped into the circular form characteristic of the crowns.
Once we have the thorn branches, a circumference is made. The branches must be handled with great care due to the spikes of the thorn. Using special gloves and pliers or tongs is advisable to avoid accidents.
After intertwining the branches giving them the desired inner diameter, they are secured using wires that reinforce the structure.
