Northern Way Information
The Camino de la Costa or Camino del Norte can be considered the first of the roads traveled by pilgrims in their search for the Apostle Santiago. In fact, it is considered that the first pilgrim to Santiago de Compostela was the king of the Asturian kingdom, Alfonso II el Casto (760-842).
During the reign of Alfonso II, the bishop of Iria Flavia, D. Teodomiro, discovers the remains of the Apostle Santiago in the year 814.
The news reaches the ears of Alfonso II. The Asturian king decides to make a pilgrimage to the region of Iria Flavia to verify in person the credibility of the news. He leaves the capital of the Asturian kingdom, Oviéu, and after arriving in Galician lands, verifying that all the news is true, he orders a small church to be built on the tomb.
The news of the discovery spread throughout the Asturian kingdom and its borders. Many Christians wanted to imitate Alfonso II and visit the tomb of the Apostle Santiago.
At that time, much of the Spanish territory was occupied by Muslims. The kingdom of Al-Andalus occupied most of the Iberian Peninsula. Only the north remained under Christian control and many pilgrims used this route as it was less dangerous and exposed.
Already in the year 844, in Clavijo, a town in what is now Rioja, the Apostle Santiago mounted on his white horse, intercedes in favor of the Christians led by Ramiro I. The intervention of the Apostle allows the Christians to win a battle that they had practically lost. against the Muslims led by Abderramán II.
It is from this moment on that the Apostle Santiago is related as Saint of the crusade against Muslims and protector of Christians in the most important battles of the Reconquest.
