Sisters of Carmel brown Scapular, Virgin figure

One of the two parts that make up the Carmelite Scapular is decorated with the image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It is brown like the Scapular of Saint Benedict.

The image of the Mt. Carmel Virgin is printed on waterproof plasticized cardboard, and embroidered on the Scapular with gold thread.

The figure represents Our Lady of Carmel crowned dressed in brown. The Virgin Mary is seated and holds the Child Jesus on her lap. The Virgin carries in her left hand the Carmelite Scapular. The Baby Jesus also carries in his hand the Holy Carmelite sacramental.

• Mount Carmel

Mount Carmel, origin of the Order of Carmelites, is represented on the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Scapular . The mount is embroidered in brown and oriented towards Heaven. Mount Carmel is located in the district of Haifa, Israel, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

The origin of the Carmelite Order is located in the years after the Third Crusade, twelve centuries after the death of Jesus. At this time a French crusader Bartholomew Avogadro, better known as Blessed Berthold of Mount Carmel, decided to follow in the footsteps of the prophet Elijah. With this intention he traveled to Mount Carmel to lead a hermit life.

Before leaving, during a prayer an image of the Virgin Mary appeared and made them a promise: for their services and devotion, Our Lady would protect them from Saracen weapons and guide them across the seas like a star, she would be their Stella Maris (Star of the Sea).
