The Glorious Cross, a Symbol of the Neocatechumenal Way

The Neocatechumenal Way, officially recognized by the Holy See in 2008, is a Catholic formation itinerary operating in more than 120 countries.

Founded by Kiko Argüello, Carmen Hernández, and Father Mario Pezzi, it focuses on small communities to revitalize faith through baptismal renewal.

The Glorious Cross of the Neocatechumenal Way, designed by Kiko Argüello in the 1960s, is not just a liturgical symbol but also an artistic, theological, and pedagogical object.

Kiko Argüello designed the Glorious Cross as a means to convey the kerygma (the central proclamation of the Christian faith).

Meaning of the Glorious Cross

The Glorious Cross synthesizes key Christian doctrines through a series of symbols:

  • Risen Christ: Depicted alive with outstretched arms, symbolizing the final defeat of death (1 Corinthians 15:55). The representation of Christ on the Cross is directly inspired by paleo-Christian art, recovering the tradition of exalted crosses without a suffering corpus. The rays emanating from his body allude to John 8:12: "I am the light of the world."
  • Tetramorphs: The symbols of the Evangelists (man/angel, lion, ox, eagle) reflect geographical universality and Christological dimensions.
  • Virgin Mary: Her position as the foundation reflects Catholic tradition, recognizing Mary as the base of the Catholic Church (Second Vatican Council, *Lumen Gentium* 63).
  • Spherical Base: The globe beneath the Virgin represents the world (Psalm 24:1), highlighting the Church’s evangelizing mission.

Hymn to the Glorious Cross, Songs of the Neocatechumenal Way

The Hymn to the Glorious Cross was composed by Kiko Argüello, based on the text of a 2nd-century Easter Homily.

The hymn is a musical composition designed to be sung in community. It consists of several verses interspersed with repetitive refrains that facilitate doctrinal memorization.

Some of the hymn’s key themes include the Cross as the Tree of Life and spiritual nourishment, as well as nuptial symbolism linked to Ephesians 5:25-32.
