Religious art from Olot, the flight to Egypt of the Holy Family
This piece of religious art from Olot depicts the Holy Family fleeing to Egypt.
After the departure of the Three Wise Men, an Angel appears to Saint Joseph in a dream. The Angel warns him that Herod intends to murder the Child Jesus.
San José, fearing for the life of his son and his wife, organizes the flight to Egypt immediately. The sooner they leave, the sooner he and his family will be safe.
Saint Joseph prepares the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus for the journey. A humble donkey will serve them to transport the few things they have. The animal, in addition, will be of great help for the moments in which the fatigue of the trip becomes more evident. The Virgin Mary can ride the donkey while carrying the Child Jesus in her arms. In this piece of religious art from Olot, the Virgin Mary is represented on the back of a donkey. In her arms she lovingly holds the Child Jesus. Saint Joseph watches his wife and son tenderly.
The Holy Family , following the instructions of the Angel, remains in Egypt until the danger to the life of the Child Jesus passes. After Herod's death, again an Angel appears to Saint Joseph. The Angel tells him that the threat is over, that their flight to Egypt is over, they can go home, they can go back to Israel.
Gospel according to Saint Matthew 2,13-15.19-23: the flight to Egypt of the Holy Family
After the departure of the wise men, the Angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said: "Get up, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt and stay there until I tell you, because Herod is going to look for the child to kill him.
Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt.
There he remained until the death of Herod, so that what the Lord had announced through the Prophet would be fulfilled: From Egypt I called my son.
When Herod died, the Angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph, who was in Egypt, and said: "Get up, take the child and his mother, and return to the land of Israel, because those who threatened the child's life."
Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and entered the land of Israel.
But learning that Archelaus was reigning in Judea, instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there and, warned in a dream, he retired to the region of Galilee, where he settled in a city called Nazareth. Thus was fulfilled what had been announced by the prophets: He will be called a Nazarene .
