Pope Francis announced the Year of Saint Joseph on December 8, 2020 through the publication of the Apostolic Letter “Patris Corde”. For one year, until December 8, 2021, all Christians will honor Saint Joseph as the adoptive father of Jesus and Patron Saint of the universal Church. He too, of course, as the employer of the workers, the parents and the good death.
Pope Francis describes Saint Joseph in the Apostolic Letter as a beloved father, a father in tenderness, a father in obedience, a father in welcome, a father of creative courage, a hard-working father and a father in shadow.
The call is made this year in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Quemadmodum Deus decree. Decree promulgated on December 8, 1870 by which Pope Blessed Pius IX declared Saint Joseph Patron of the universal Church.
With the convocation of this Jubilee Holy Year, the Holy Catholic Church invites us to reflect on the role of Saint Joseph as a loving and humble father at the service of his family, as protector of his adopted Son, the Child Jesus, and of his wife, the Virgin Mary.
In the Holy Year of Saint Joseph, as in previous Jubilee Years (the Year of Faith, the Year of the Eucharist, and the Jubilee Year of Mercy), the Catholic Church will grant plenary indulgences according to a series of established conditions.
