Image of San Antonio Abad, other information
Religious image in which Saint Antón is represented with a large white beard, a symbol of his longevity. According to tradition, he lived 105 years.
The Saint wears a brown habit with a hood. In his left hand he carries a staff , as a pastor/abbot of the monastic communities he helped create. In his right hand he carries a book, a symbol of the Holy Scriptures and of Saint Anthony's profound knowledge of them. A golden bell hangs around his neck. This symbol is associated with two meanings:
- The first, as an identifying element of the Preachers, people capable of attracting people as the bell calls the faithful to unity in the Liturgy.
- The second, as a symbol of the animals of the Antonian friars. The members of the Order of Saint Anthony, as they lived on the charity of the people, left their domestic animals free to be fed by charitable people. The Hospitaller Brothers of San Antonio put bells on these animals they owned to distinguish them from the others. These animals served as food for the needy and the sick.
A pig is represented at the feet of Antonio Abad. Symbol, on the one hand, of all the animals of which San Antón is patron. On the other hand, as a representation of an impure, dirty and sinful being. The pig is the symbol of the devil. Saint Anthony defeated the Fallen Angel by rejecting each of the offers that the demon tempted him with during the Saint's retreats in the desert.
