Martyrdom of Saint Lucia
The image of Saint Lucia is represented with the palm of martyrdom and with two eyes on a chalice.
The palm is the symbol of the martyrdom suffered by Saint Lucia. The Saint was beheaded for confessing her love to Jesus.
The two eyes in a chalice represent the way in which the Saint died. Santa Lucia, before her death, was deprived of her eyes by order of proconsul Pascasio.
Life of Saint Lucia
According to tradition, Saint Lucia was born in Syracuse, Sicily, around 283 AD. She was an orphan raised in the Christian faith by her mother. Her father died when she was very young. From a very young age she dedicated her life to Jesus and took a vow of virginity.
She was accused of being a Christian before the proconsul Pascasio, who condemned her to be raped, but her body could not be moved even by ten men. Seeing this, the proconsul condemned her to be burned at the stake, but the fire could not harm her skin. Pascasio, full of anger, ordered the eyes to be gouged out, but he continued to see. She was finally executed with a sword.
