Lace as an ornamental element in Catholic priest albs

There are different versions about the origin of the liturgical use of lace. One of the most accepted theories places the origin of lace on albs in the Middle Ages.

During this period, priests began to use more elaborate and ornate liturgical garments to distinguish them from the tunics and clothing worn by laypeople.

In that period, the aim was to give a more dignified appearance to priestly vestments to reinforce the solemnity of liturgical celebrations. In those years, lace was handcrafted artisanally, a laborious and costly process. The use of lace on liturgical tunics, such as the alb, was a way to show the faithful the importance of the people who wore them.

Lace became widespread in albs and other liturgical garments. Nowadays, it is common for lace to be decorated with religious elements such as Crosses or JHS.
