Advent Candles in Four Colors

The Advent candles, used in the Advent wreath, are a key element to mark the weeks leading up to Christmas Eve.

There are different traditions for lighting the Advent candles. The most common is to light one candle each Sunday of Advent. Lighting a candle holds important symbolic significance. Individuals or communities, when lighting a candle, set intentions as a way to prepare for the Birth of Christ.

Below is a suggested lighting sequence for the Advent candles in four colors:

Purple Candle

Light the purple candle on the first Sunday of Advent. The color purple invites reflection, penance, and heart conversion, reminding us of the importance of spiritual preparation to receive Christ. Advent is a season in which we should look within.

Red Candle

Light the red candle during the second week of Advent. The color red represents the love and sacrifice of Jesus for humanity. Red reminds us of Jesus' sacrifice and His love for humanity. During the second week, once we have looked within ourselves, we should observe our surroundings, look around us, and try to help others by following Jesus' example.

Green Candle

The green candle is a good choice for the third Sunday of Advent, the third week of Advent. Green symbolizes hope and eternal life in Christ, reminding us of the promise of salvation and spiritual growth. Human love is incomplete without the hope of Salvation that God offers us. The coming of Jesus shows us the way to keep our hearts joyful; Christ is on the way.

White Candle

The white candle is usually lit in the final week of Advent. White symbolizes the proximity of Christ’s presence. Once we have looked within, given our love to others, and opened our hearts to hope, the Child Jesus awaits us. Another Christmas will fill our hearts with love and joy. Again, the presence of the Savior will remind us of the importance of preparation, penance, and joy.
