Our Lady of the Assumption, August 15, a national holiday in Spain

On August 15, the Solemnity of Our Lady of the Assumption, also known as the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

On August 15, one of the most traditional Marian festivals in Spain is celebrated. According to some studies, the cult of the Assumption of the Virgin begins as early as the 7th century.

Despite the long tradition of worship, it was not until the time of the Reconquest that the fervor for the figure of the Virgin of the Assumption gained momentum and spread throughout the Spanish territory. Jaime I the Conqueror was one of the main promoters of the cult of the Virgin of the Assumption. The well-known monarch wanted to build more than two thousand churches and some cathedrals throughout the Spanish territory, most of them related to or dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

The growth of devotion had its main source in the lands that bathe the Mediterranean, taking strong roots in the area of Elche, the Balearic Islands and all of Catalonia. The cult of the Virgin of the Assumption had strong popular support, especially in towns with a port. The great acceptance of the cult of the Assumption of the Virgin caused numerous petitions to declare it as a Dogma.

The popularity and devotion aroused by the Virgin of the Assumption, also known as Our Lady of the Assumption, explains the innumerable towns and neighborhood festivals of which she is the patron and in which festivities and pilgrimages with mass are held in her honor.

It is also a very important holiday in countries like Paraguay, Salvador, Guatemala, Bolivia,...

The Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven

On August 15, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven is celebrated. On this feast of Holy Mother Church, the decision of our almighty God to take the body and soul of Mary to the Kingdom of Heaven is commemorated.

Jesus, while suffering the martyrdom of the Cross, asked his Holy Mother to welcome Saint John in her heart as if he were her son. He asked Saint John to love the Saint Mary as if she were his mother. Shortly after Christ gave his life for us on the Cross. After the tragic death of Jesus Christ, his body was unnailed from the Cross and buried. On the third day our Savior defeated death and rose from the dead, coming back to life.

After the Ascension to heaven of Christ, the Virgin Mary, as her son had requested, lived with Saint John. The facts and experiences of the Saint and the Virgin during the days after the Resurrection are not recorded in the Gospels. On the day of Pentecost , 50 days after Easter, Saint Mary is blessed by the Holy Spirit together with the Apostles. The tongues of fire are deposited on the heads of the followers who prayed in the Cenacle. The day of Pentecost is considered as the date on which the Holy Catholic Church was born. On that date, the apostles and the Virgin Mary, filled with the Holy Spirit, begin a long journey to fulfill the mission that their Master had entrusted to them, to carry the message of God throughout the world, to make the Church grow to the ends of the globe. . The Christian people took their first steps full of hope and joy for the mystery of Pentecost.

Little is known of Our Lady's life in post-Pentecostal times. It is believed that he fulfilled the will of Christ to live with Saint John, the beloved apostle, but the place of residence of both is unknown. Some scholars defend that they resided in Ephesus, while others maintain that Saint Mary spent the last years of her life in Jerusalem.

If there is debate about the post-Pentecostal life of the Divine Virgin Mary, there is also discussion about her death. If some believe that the Assumption of the Virgin took place before her death on earth, others affirm that the Virgin Mary did go through the stage of death before her Ascension. This second opinion is, perhaps, the one that makes the most sense from the point of view that Holy Mary ascended to heaven as Christ had done, after having defeated death without having experienced the corruption of his body. Most of the supporters of this Christian current defend that the Virgin Mary died for love, for the urgent need to sit in the Kingdom of Heaven next to the Lord.

The dogma of the Assumption of the Virgin

The dogma of the Assumption of the Virgin , also known as the dogma of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a truth revealed by God, just like the other dogmas of the Holy Catholic Church . As the word of God it is an unquestionably true, irrevocable, definitive and infallible truth. The importance of dogmas in the Church is paramount. The stories, testimonies and affirmations recognized as dogmas are the pillars on which faith and Christian belief are built, which we remember with our prayers in each Liturgy. Understanding and internalizing Christian dogmas is an act of simple beauty that, as a creature of God, brings us closer to our Creator.

The dogma of the Assumption of the Virgin speaks of the ascent of the body and soul of the Virgin to the glory of the Kingdom of Heaven. Our Holy Mother, after finishing her earthly life, received the special privilege of God to be glorified and taken to Heaven. His body ascended to Heaven preserving all its purity, without being in any way stained or affected by sin or the corruption of the flesh.

After several centuries of requests from numerous priests and bishops, the Marian dogma of faith was promulgated by Pope Pius XII , who had been Bishop of Sardes, on November 1, 1950 through the Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus. In this publication, Pope Pius XII says that the Immaculate Virgin Mary, after finishing her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.
