Saint Anthony with the Child Jesus
Saint Anthony of Padua is one of the best-known Franciscan saints. He was a Portuguese saint who gained great recognition in his time due to the numerous miracles he performed, his deep devotion to Jesus, and his exceptional preaching ability.
The saint is depicted holding the Child Jesus in his arms, one of the most iconic images of Saint Anthony of Padua. This representation originates from the apparition of the Child Jesus to the saint while he was praying in the castle of Camposampiero, belonging to Count Tisso.
In the painting, Saint Anthony is depicted wearing a Franciscan habit and cradling the Child Jesus in his left arm. In his right arm, the saint carries a bouquet of white lilies, symbolizing purity and the fight against evil. According to tradition, it was Jesus Himself who gave the bouquet to the saint during His apparition.
The Child Jesus wears a golden tunic and has a gentle and kind expression. With His right hand, He makes the gesture of blessing with two fingers extended.
