Incense of roses, what is it used for in the Catholic Church
The role of incense in various religions dates back many centuries before the birth of Christ. There are references that speak of the use of rose incense and other aromas in China in the year 2,000 BC.
There is no exact period to identify the use of incense in Catholic liturgical celebrations. Despite this lack of knowledge, we can say that incense is a very present element in the Holy Scriptures, since it is mentioned on numerous occasions.
In Exodus 30,8 it is said:
“Present this offering of fragrant incense constantly before the Lord, throughout the generations”
Or in Psalms 141.2 you can read:
"May my prayer rise to you like incense, and my hands up, like the evening offering"
We can also read in Revelation 8,3:
"And another Angel came who stood next to the altar with a golden censer and received a large quantity of perfumes, to offer them together with the prayer of all the saints, on the golden altar that is before the throne"
Through these three examples we can identify the main function of incense within liturgical celebrations. Incense is a symbol of the prayers of the faithful ascending towards heaven. An element of union between the earthly world and the heavenly world.
The incense of roses, and other aromas, serves as a link between the faithful, the priests and God during the mass.
Properties of rose incense
Rose incense is fundamentally defined by the following properties:
The scent of rose incense
The smell is one of the most important properties of any type of incense. The smell of rose incense is a pleasant fragrance, penetrating but not too intense. It can be used both for liturgical celebrations, processions or domestic use.
The color of rose incense
There is a wide variety of colors in the different types of incense. Rose incense can be of different shades: red, white, yellow , etc. When making rose incense we have preferred to keep the pink tone because we understand that it better fits the mental image we have of this type of incense.
The color of the incense is a property with purely aesthetic criteria since it does not condition the smell, combustion or any other characteristic of the product.
Grain size of rose incense
The size of the incense grain is another important property. Greek rose incense is characterized by having one of the largest grains within the different options that can be purchased. Each grain of Greek rose incense has an approximate diameter of 1-1.5 cm.
The size of the grain has a direct influence on the incensing process, method of burning and combustion of the incense. In principle, incense with larger grains has a slower and longer-lasting ignition and combustion process. While incense powder or small grains are easier to light but have a more accelerated combustion, generating aroma in a shorter period of time.
Despite these peculiarities, the method of using (burning) Greek-type grain incense is very similar to other incense: use of charcoal to light the incense, use of censers and tongs to burn the incense optimally, etc...
