Saint Benedict medal keychain meaning
The keychain is an adaptation of the medal of Saint Benedict, a Catholic Church badge of a marked symbolism related to the saint and his faith.
The keychain has two sides, the obverse, decorated with the figure of Saint Benedict, and the reverse, decorated with the Cross of Saint Benedict.
Keychain meaning: the figure of Saint Benedict
The front of the medal shows the image of Saint Benedict and several symbols related to his life.
Saint Benedict holds in his right hand a Cross, symbol of Christ. One of the most important elements in the humble life of the Saint.
On the sides of the figure there are two very significant symbols in the life of Saint Benedict: the raven and the chalice with poisoned wine. Both elements are related to the protection that God gives to those who love him with humility and devotion.
On both sides of the figure of the Saint, there are two parts of the text that form the phrase Crux patris benedicti. It is a Latin expression that means Cross of Father Benedict.
On the edge of this side of the medal there is the text Ejus in obitu nro praesentia muniamus. It is a Latin expression that can be translated as We wish to be strengthened by His presence in our death.
Keychain meaning: the Cross of Saint Benedict
The reverse of the Saint Benedict medal symbolizes the victory over evil and temptation. Saint Benedict had to face the attacks of the devil.
This side of the medal has several elements of great symbolism. The first one is the Cross of Saint Benedict, located in the central area of the medal.
The vertical pole of the Cross carries the letters C S S M L, arranged from top to bottom, creating the initials of Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux (The Holy Cross be my light).
The horizontal crossbar includes the letters N D S M D, arranged from left to right, forming the initials of Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux (May the dragon not be my guide).
In each hollow of the arms of the Cross are the letters C S P B. These letters are the initials of Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti, meaning Cross of the Holy Father Benito.
On the perimeter of the medal are four groups of letters V R S N S M V and S M Q L I V B. They are the initials of the Latin phrases Vade Retro Satana, Nunquam Suade Mihi Vana, Sunt Mala Quae Libas, Ipse Venena Bibas, meaning Go back, Satan, do not suggest vain things to me, evil is what you offer, drink your own poison.
Finally, at the top of the medal, we find the Latin word PAX, meaning Peace. A name associated with the mindset of San Benito and the entire Benedictine order.
