Figure of Saint Sebastian, other information
On January 20 we celebrate the day of Saint Sebastian, patron saint of soldiers, athletes and archers.
The name of San Sebastian means person worthy of respect, venerable person.
Saint Sebastian, life of the saint
According to tradition, Saint Sebastian was born in France in the town of Narbonne around the year 256. The saint was born into a family with a great military tradition and noble status. Saint Sebastian's parents were devout Christians. They educated the young Saint Sebastian in the Christian religion.
The saint's parents decided that Sebastián would follow in his father's footsteps and pursue a military career. To carry out the studies San Sebastian was sent to Milan, Italy.
San Sebastián would remain in military school until graduating with honors. Already at that time he stood out far above his peers.
During those years Christians were persecuted throughout the Roman Empire. The persecution was especially bloody in the capital, Rome. Saint Sebastian , seeing an opportunity to help other Christians, decided to travel to Rome.
When he arrived at the capital of the empire, Saint Sebastian became part of the emperor's personal guard. The saint had great military ability and brilliant intelligence, which allowed him to rise quickly within his unit. His rise was so rapid that it soon reached the ears of Emperor Diocletian himself.
The emperor marveled at the stories he heard from San Sebastian . Such was the name and the trust that the saint gained that the emperor, unaware that Saint Sebastian was a Christian , decided to name him captain of the Praetorian guard. This special unit was responsible for the custody of the emperor himself. San Sebastián, in this way, became one of those in charge of protecting the emperor's life, a highly demanding position that was only carried out by very great soldiers.
Despite his meteoric rise, San Sebastian had not forgotten his roots or the Christian upbringing his parents had given him. During his stay in Rome, his work had been incessant, he had helped persecuted Christians, Christians who had been imprisoned, etc... Saint Sebastian also did a great evangelizing job among his companions and friends, the saint always spoke of the great joy that followed Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Saint Sebastian, martyrdom of the saint
Despite being in a position of great prestige, Saint Sebastian had a secret that the emperor was unaware of. Saint Sebastian was a Christian and helped other Christians in any way he could.
One day Saint Sebastian was summoned to the presence of Emperor Maximian, Diocletian's successor. In the audience, the emperor told Saint Sebastian that he had been told that he was a Christian. The emperor reminded the saint that being a Christian was forbidden. Saint Sebastian recognized his condition as a Christian , he had always been faithful to the word of Christ. The saint's faith was strong and his love for Christ unwavering.
Diocletian told the saint that he had a choice, follow Christ and die under a hail of arrows, or renounce the Christian faith and have a prosperous military career. Saint Sebastian did not hesitate for a second, he had always been a Christian and would continue to be until his death. He preferred martyrdom to giving up the love of Christ.
The emperor sentenced Saint Sebastian to die by arrows . The saint was taken to a field where he was stripped naked and tied to a post. Once he was well tied up, the order was given to shoot arrows at his body to kill him.
The executioners, after launching numerous arrows, left San Sebastián for dead. Another Christian had paid for his condition. Another Christian had been martyred by inhuman Roman persecution.
When the Roman soldiers withdrew, fellow Christians from San Sebastián went to collect the body. When they approached, they beheld with joy that the saint was alive.
They quickly took him to where Santa Isabel lived. The saint took care of Saint Sebastian with great care and got the saint to recover from the arrows.
Once he was recovered, he told his companions that he wanted to see the emperor. They all told him to flee Rome. If the emperor found out that he was still alive, he would be executed. San Sebastian was not convinced by all these arguments, he wanted to denounce the situation of the Christians. The emperor had to rectify, the percussion of Christians was a disgrace to the Roman Empire.
Saint Sebastian went to see the emperor who received him stupefied, he thought that the saint was dead. Saint Sebastian criticized the persecution of Christians. The emperor did not come to his senses. He told him that Christians would continue to be persecuted. He also ordered that San Sebastián be whipped to death.
In the year 288 Saint Sebastian died from whipping. His executioners left the body of the saint abandoned in a field. His fellow Christians picked him up and buried him in a catacomb on the Appian Way.
