Catholic Imagery from Olot | Handcrafted Statues

Catholic imagery from Olot represents one of the most important artistic and devotional expressions in Spain and worldwide. The statues produced in the workshops of Olot follow a tradition that began in the late 19th century in the town of Olot, located in the Garrotxa region (Catalonia).

The founding of the Christian Art workshop in 1880 marks the beginning of this tradition, which would go on to earn worldwide recognition among collectors of Catholic imagery.

An Artisanal Process by Christian Art

The process of creating sculptures in Olot remains fundamentally artisanal:

  • Initial modeling in clay.
  • Reinforced two-part plaster mold.
  • Use of papier-mâché pulp (sawdust, glue, and paper). Since the 19th century, this material has been recognized as a noble and venerable material for Catholic worship by the Sacred Congregation of Rites.
  • Drying and removal of the hollow figure.
  • Assembly of parts, insertion of glass eyes.
  • Hand-painting and detailed finishes.

The Saints Museum of Olot

The Christian Art company and the tradition of Catholic imagery from Olot cannot be understood without the Saints Museum of Olot.

The museum, inaugurated in 2007, is located in a 19th-century neo-Gothic building that serves as the headquarters of the Christian Art workshop. It houses a varied collection of Catholic sculptures, nativity figures, and Holy Week processional statues, along with tools, molds, and historical artifacts from century-old workshops.

Visitors can also observe the complete process of crafting a Catholic statue—from molding to painting and decoration—experiencing the full creation journey firsthand.
