Saint Stephen protomartyr

Saint Stephen also known as Saint Stephen Protomartyr or Saint Stephen the Protomartyr Deacon for being one of the first followers of our Lord Jesus Christ who gave his life to defend and make known the word and work of Jesus . He died for proclaiming his faith in Jesus Christ.

Esteban's name comes from the Greek Stephanos, which means "crowned" or "crown". Saint Stephen lived up to his name since he was a Saint filled with the Holy Spirit.

Most of the information we have about Saint Stephen is found in the Acts of the Apostles (6,1 - 8,2) .

Saint Stephen, one of the seven deacons

After the death of Jesus, the twelve disciples began to carry out the work that their teacher had entrusted to them, to carry his word to all corners of the world. Some of the Twelve left for new lands to Evangelize. Another remained in Jerusalem to make known to all the Word of Our Lord Jesus.

Soon the news began to spread, and more and more people began to come to Jerusalem to hear and be filled with the knowledge of the Apostles. The community of Christ followers continued to grow in Jerusalem .

At first, it was the Apostles themselves who coordinated the growing Christian community. For the Apostles, their evangelizing work was a priority, so they decided to reorganize the life of the community.

The Apostles proposed holding an election. The Christian community would elect seven people from among its members who would be in charge of coordinating the day-to-day work. These seven people were known as deacons (a word that comes from the Latin “diacŏnus”, which means servant).

One of these seven deacons was Saint Stephen. His election as a deacon shows the great love that the members of the Christian community had for him. He was considered a person filled with the Holy Spirit, a cultured and capable man. San Esteban, in addition to being one of those responsible for the organization of the community, was a great evangelizer. The Saint had an impeccable oratory and was very knowledgeable about history.

The martyrdom of Saint Stephen

The Apostles, as had happened with Jesus, suffered strong repression and were persecuted by the Jewish authorities. On many occasions they were made prisoners and we took them to jail for short periods of time.

Among the most powerful representatives of the synagogues, Stephen's name began to be heard. A young man with great facility for words who was converting a large number of people to the Christian religion.

They wanted to meet him and debate with him. The Jewish elders and scribes made an appointment with Saint Stephen to try to disrupt his arguments, and thus discredit the message of Christ that he transmitted to all the people of Jerusalem.

Saint Stephen met with the Jewish authorities and left them deeply upset. He had spoken with wisdom, his words were filled with the Holy Spirit. The Jews could not do anything before their arguments. They had tried to discredit him and had achieved the opposite effect, San Esteban at that time had more notoriety than ever.

The Jews, fearful that many more people would follow him, drew up a plan to destroy Saint Stephen, they would buy false witnesses who claimed that the Saint had said blasphemous words against the Temple and Moses .

With this strategy they managed to take San Esteban in front of the Supreme Court of the Nation, the Sanhedrin. In front of the Court the false witnesses repeated their testimonies. They said that Saint Stephen had said that "Jesus, the Nazarene, will destroy this place (the Jewish Temple) and change the customs that Moses transmitted to us."

No accusation could be more apt to excite the mob; the wrath of the elders and scribes had already been kindled by the first reports of the Apostles' preaching. Esteban was arrested, and dragged before the Sanhedrin, where he was accused of saying that "Jesus, the Nazarene, would destroy this Place [the Temple], and would change the customs that Moses has transmitted to us" (6, 12-14).

Those testimonies ignited the spirits of the members of the Court. They asked San Esteban to defend himself against those accusations. The Saint, full of the grace of the Holy Spirit, began by speaking of the history of the people of Israel, from its beginnings, then argued that he had not blasphemed against Moses and finally, with an accusing tone, affirmed that the Jews had crucified Jesus, the “Just” , the envoy who had been announced by the prophets.

Given those statements, the members of the court sentenced San Esteban to death by stoning. The Saint was taken out of Jerusalem and everything was arranged for him to be stoned. Saint Stephen said “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit” (7, 58). After receiving several stones, he said goodbye to this world bending his knees and shouting "Lord, do not take this sin into account" (7,59).
