Tabernacle of the Good Shepherd

Tabernacle with relief of Jesus, the good shepherd

The door of this model of Tabernacle for Church is decorated with a scene in relief. In the scene a shepherd is represented taking care of his flock. The shepherd holds a stick in his right hand, while with his left hand he caresses the head of one of his beloved sheep.

The decoration of the tabernacle evokes the identification that Jesus makes of himself as the good shepherd. In the Gospel of Saint John you can read that Jesus says "I am the good shepherd".

Jesus makes an allegory comparing the work of a shepherd with his herd and the mission that He must fulfill to save humanity. Jesus will not only care for, guide and teach his flock, but he will be willing to give his life for the flock as a good shepherd would. Only total love can lead to the ultimate sacrifice, surrender one's life.

Furthermore, Jesus speaks of the mutual knowledge between his flock and its shepherd, between Jesus and his disciples, between Jesus and his people, his Church. Those faithful to Jesus will recognize their Lord. This knowledge, together with the love that God gives us, will allow men to form a single people, a single flock, a single true Church.

Jesus is the shepherd who leads the members of the Church to peace and eternal life.

Gospel of Saint John 10:11-18

11 " I am the good shepherd . The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd, and the sheep do not belong to him. When he sees the wolf approaching, he abandons the sheep and flees; then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it.13 And that man flees because, being a hired hand, he does not care about the sheep.

14 I am the good shepherd ; I know my sheep, and they know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know him, and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not of this fold, and I must bring them also. So they will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock and one shepherd. 17 That is why the Father loves me: because I give my life to receive it again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I give it of my own free will. I have authority to deliver it, and I also have authority to receive it again. This is the commandment I received from my Father."
