The Advent season is the period that marks the beginning of the liturgical calendar. It is a time of introspection and preparation for Christmas, the birth of Jesus.
Various elements symbolically represent Advent; among them, one of the most recognizable is the Advent candles and wreaths. 
The Advent candles serve as a physical representation of the countdown established during the four Sundays leading up to Christmas Eve. The four candles are used to mark each of the weeks remaining until the Savior 's birth.

What are the four Advent candles?

The four Advent candles are made of wax or paraffin and lit on Sundays before Christmas.
In addition to the symbolism of light and the color of the candles, they also serve as a guide to carry out actions that prepare our body, mind, and soul for the arrival of Jesus.
The Advent candles and wreath serve as a starting point for prayer, penance, and overall preparation of our hearts for the arrival of the Savior. We must sincerely examine our behavior and thoughts to be ready for the coming of Light and Jesus's arrival.

The colors of the Advent candles | Meaning of the candles.

Unlike other candles commonly used on the altars of our parishes, Advent candles have the particularity of being of different colors.
In general, although the four liturgical colors are usually used, there is also the possibility of using rose-colored candles, a color deeply linked to Advent, specifically to the third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday.

• Purple Advent candles

Purple is one of the most critical colors during Advent. This color symbolizes penance, internal reflection, Christmas preparation, and Jesus's birth.
Penance, seeking forgiveness for sins through prayer and actions, is one of the most valuable actions to carry out during Advent.

• Rose Advent candles

Rose-colored candles represent joy and happiness at the arrival of Christmas. The birth of our Savior, who once again comes into our lives to give us the opportunity to attain eternal life.
The rose-colored candle is usually lit on the third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday.

• Red Advent candles

Red has different symbolic meanings within Catholic liturgy. Generally, it is usually associated with the Holy Spirit or the blood of Christ. It generally has a circular shape. The circle is a figure related to God, as it is a perfect and infinite shape, having neither beginning nor end. These two attributes apply to God and His love for humanity. God loves men and women infinitely, which is why He sends us, once again, His Son.
It is common for the wreath to be decorated with leaves or other green plant elements.

Advent candles order

Advent candles are usually used in a domestic, family setting. Families often use Advent candles in their homes as a complementary element to parish liturgical celebrations.
This more intimate, family-oriented celebration has led to different ways of lighting the candles, types of wreaths, prayers, etc.

Traditionally, the lighting of Advent candles was done as follows.
First, the purple candle was lit. The first week of Advent was used for introspection of the past. A sincere critique of our actions and thoughts during the past year. We review our mistakes and pray for forgiveness.
The second candle is the green Advent candle. After the internal analysis and acknowledgment of our mistakes and sins, we must fill our hearts with hope. The arrival of Jesus is near, and a new opportunity appears before us.
The red or rose-colored candle is lit on the third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday. It is a moment of joy; hope turns into pleasure. The Birth of Jesus is very close.
Finally, the white Advent candle is lit. The white candle represents the presence of God; Christmas is coming; Jesus is about to be born.
