The Color White in the Mantles of the Virgin Mary
Figures of the Virgin Mary are one of the most relevant iconographic elements within the Catholic Church.
There are numerous representations of Our Holy Mother due to the countless miraculous events and appearances through which the Virgin Mary has graced humanity.
Our Holy Mother has chosen to reveal herself to those she deemed worthy, even before her Assumption. For example, there is evidence of her appearance to the Apostle James in what is today the city of Zaragoza. This appearance has gained popularity among the Catholic faithful and is celebrated under the name of Our Lady of the Pillar.
Figures and images of the Virgin Mary represent appearances and/or significant events. Attributes or characteristics that the seers were able to see or that the Virgin transmitted to them are reproduced in figures.
There is a wide variety of colors and attributes that can be observed in figures of the Virgin Mary around the world.
One common color in the statues is white (or beige). In the Catholic Church, the color white is associated with light, purity, virginity, and divinity. In the case of the Virgin Mary, the white mantle symbolizes her immaculate purity, her role as the mother of God, and her closeness to the divine.
Among the Marian avocations in which the Virgin Mary wears a beige mantle, we can mention:
-
Our Lady of Lourdes
Marian apparition that arose from the appearances of the Virgin to Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, France. A total of eighteen appearances took place between February and July of 1858 in the Massabielle grotto, on the outskirts of Lourdes.
Bernadette described that the Virgin Mary appeared to her dressed in white with a blue sash, with a rosary and golden roses. Our Lady of Lourdes is represented with a white mantle and a blue sash, symbolizing purity and heaven.

Our Lady of Fatima
The Virgin appeared to three shepherd children, Lucia dos Santos and her cousins, Jacinta and Francisco Marto. On May 13, 1917, the children were tending their sheep in Cova da Iria, near Fatima. According to the children, a woman dressed in white, radiant, and holding a rosary, appeared to them and asked them to pray the rosary and return for six consecutive months.
The figure of Our Lady of Fatima, with a white mantle and a rosary in her hands, is a symbol of hope and prayer for world peace.

Our Lady of Mercy
Our Lady of Mercy or Our Lady of Mercy is a Marian devotion that originated in 1218 when the Virgin Mary appeared to Pedro Nolasco, James I of Aragon, and Raymond of Penyafort.
The three witnessed the same apparition, and the Virgin Mary asked them to find a Catholic order to redeem captives. Following the Virgin Mary's instructions, they founded on August 10, 1218, the Religious Order of Our Lady of Mercy (the Mercedarians), whose main goal is to perform acts of piety, especially with prisoners and captives.
The most common representation of Our Lady of Mercy is dressed in white, with a tunic, scapular, and cape, and the Mercedarian shield on her chest. Many figures also include chains and shackles as symbols of captivity.
-
Our Lady of the Snows
Its origin dates back to a 4th-century legend in Rome. The Virgin appeared to a wealthy couple and told them that they should build a basilica in the place she would indicate.
The indication of the place came in the form of a miraculous snowfall that occurred in the middle of August on Esquiline Hill. The church was consecrated under the name of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Basilica of Saint Mary Major).
The Virgin Mary is represented with a white mantle and a white dress.
