What does deacon mean?
This term derives from the Greek "diakonos", which translates as "servant". Fundamentally, the deacon is someone consecrated through a sacramental rite for the purpose of serving both the Church and the community of the faithful.
Unlike priests, deacons do not receive the sacrament of priestly ordination, although they are ordained ministers. Their work covers a variety of key tasks and responsibilities.
Among their functions, the deacon works closely with the priest in the liturgy of the Eucharist and in the administration of other sacraments such as Baptism or Marriage. They are authorized to read the Gospel, offer homilies, deliver Communion, and facilitate the celebration of the sacraments.
The deacon's vocation is centered on service to the most disadvantaged and vulnerable sectors of society. This includes engaging in charitable activities, visiting the sick, supporting the underprivileged, and contributing to social support initiatives.
Another fundamental part of their mission is the dissemination of the Word of God and the teaching of the principles of the Catholic faith. The deacon can lead catechesis programs, adult formation, and evangelization efforts.
Under certain circumstances, deacons may also have administrative roles within the Church, always under the guidance and authority of a priest or bishop.
What does the stole mean for a deacon?
The diaconal stole is a key religious ornament identifying deacons within the Catholic Church.
The deacon's stole has deep symbolic meaning. It represents the willingness to serve and the authority of the deacon within their community. Like the priestly stole, it reflects the obligations and powers that the deacon acquires through their ordination.
The ordination ceremony marks the moment when the deacon receives this important symbol. A bishop places the stole over the deacon's shoulder. This act represents the moment when the deacon is conferred the responsibility and power to perform their ministry.
The way to wear the diaconal stole distinguishes deacons from priests. While the priestly stole hangs straight down the front of the body, the diaconal stole crosses over the chest and is secured on the right side.
